Upgrading to Magento 2

Magento has been the go-to site platform for larger e-commerce platforms for some time.  If you need the flexibility that self-hosting and managing your platform brings then Magento 2 is definitely the right solution for you.

Smaller businesses may benefit from a less flexible, but simpler system such as Shopify, this takes care of many of the day to day hazards, such as the need to update your software and plug-ins, but limits your options in regard to expansion within the platform.

The trade-off comes when you start wanting to run your store as a real e-commerce business, rather than an add-on to a primarily offline brand.  At that point, you need the power of Magento in your corner and help from DOM Marketing to move server or re-platform to Magento 2.

What is Magento 2 and how does it work?

Magento 2 is the upgrade to the Magento platform.  It is a fundamental redesign from the old package and the backend is far easier to use than the previous version. Like most websites, the coding and plugins fit together to give you functionality for your site.

You can export from the site in a spreadsheet format, this effectively gives the location of the text and images, and the image dimensions that go together to form your site.

Your website engine (e.g. Magento) pulls this information together.  Therefore exporting products across to the new site is largely a matter of setting the information up so that it appears in the right places on the new site.  For the untrained, however, this is a lot easier than it sounds.

How to upgrade to Magento 2

Magento 1 or 2 are not easy products to deploy, at least not at a large scale.  If you are unfamiliar with the ways of building a website, you would be better to hand off the development stage or migrating to a new platform off to an experienced team, such as the developers at DOM Marketing.

Upgrading to Magento 2 will give you far more control and reliability, particularly as code updates begin to be decommissioned in Magento 1.

In truth, Magento 2 is not really a simple upgrade from Magento 1.  So much has changed in terms of the UI and the underlying code, that it is more of a migration to a new platform rather than a straight upgrade path.  The new features and improved look and feel, however, make it worthwhile.

New features in Magento 2

  • Magento 2 offers a number of new features. These include
  • Built for Responsive Themes from the Ground Up
  • Ajax Add to Cart Functionality
  • Split databases for Product Data, Checkout and Orders
  • Full Page Caching
  • Lighten server loads and accelerate page load speed by up to 50%!
  • Streamlined Checkout Process
  • Brings significant changes to checkout page called to reduce the rate of shopping cart abandonment
  • Redesigned Admin Panel and Easy Product Upload
  • Supports CSS3, HTML5 and MySQL natively

Is Magento 1 now dead?

The Magento 1 platform is not yet dead, but it has checked itself into intensive care.  It looks as though support will officially end sometime in early 2020, however you are likely to find that plugins are abandoned and the entire experience becomes less secure for both you and your customers.
