Big Changes for Merchants Centre Imports
In an email to service users, Google has announced that it is to drop support for its current integration services allowing simple feed management for the merchant centre. The service is used by several platforms including Big Commerce, Presta Shop and Magento. The announcement comes little more than a year after Google first introduced the automatic uploads from these platforms with great fanfare.
The integrations, designed by Google’s in-house developers currently allow merchants running these platforms to connect their product catalogues directly to the Merchant Centre platform.
Google Press Statement Announces End of Merchant Centre Integration
In a press statement received by the US news media, Google stated that it is ending the partnerships “in order to better focus on solutions that will make the Shopping ads onboarding a more seamless experience. We’re continuing to work with e-commerce platforms to explore more frictionless integration opportunities.”
The apps and plugins currently enabling the uploads such as the Google Shopping app for BigCommerce and any associated feeds will stop working on 20th March.
Merchants who are currently using the Google-designed solution will need to use an alternative method to upload the feed or find a third party solution supported by their platform before the cut-off date.
Changes to Merchant Centre – No Need to Worry
Third party services to manage this data already exist, so whilst it is unfortunate that Google is discontinuing this official service with an announcement that hints an as yet unfinished replacement, there remains plenty of support out there to ensure that your feeds don’t simply stop running in the middle of March.
