Facebook Live Videos Prioritised In Your News Feed

3rd March 2016

Facebook has recently added a global streaming feature to their platform called Live Video, which is essentially what it says on the tin – a video which is being broadcast live. The feature is likely to be popular with influencer marketing.

The timeline on Facebook has now been altered so that these live videos will appear higher up in your news feed which means there is more of a chance of seeing them, as a result we will see a rise in the popularity of the videos.

Facebook Live to Increase Video Engagement

Facebook claims that viewers will spend more time watching a video if it is live than watching one that has been pre-recorded. A lot of the live videos can be quite long so if the live videos engage the users like this it will mean a lot more people will be spending more time on the social media platform, a win-win situation for both the content provider and Facebook advertisers.

The Google Press Statement says:

“Now that more and more people are watching Live videos, we are considering Live Videos as a new content type – different from normal videos – and learning how to rank them for people in News Feed. As a first step, we are making a small update to (the) News Feed so that Facebook Live videos are more likely to appear higher in News Feed when those videos are actually live, compared to after they are no longer live,”

They also claim that after the update, the use of the live videos shouldn’t have any effect on the pages of Facebook.

The Live Video feature was originally launched on iOS in August of 2015 for a small number of  verified accounts. Now everyone including influencer marketing professionals can use this feature. Android users will gain this feature in the coming months.
